This clip shows the California condor's amazing reflexes and agility. The prey-go-neesh (condor) is part of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP) flock. The NCCRP is a partnership between the Yurok Tribe and Redwood National and State Parks (NPS). The Tribe and park released the first birds in 2022. Prior to the reintroduction, the last local observation of a condor occurred in 1892. The bird was killed and placed in a museum. Now, there are 17 free-flying condors in Yurok C

California condors have soared in the skies of North America for some 11,000 years. By 1982, the wild population had dwindled to just 22 birds, largely due to lead poisoning from bullets left in the carrion they consume. In collaboration with The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other conservation partners, the L.A. Zoo began an intensive breeding and reintroduction program, which has seen the California condor population climb to more than 550 individuals—with more than half of those birds li

The California Condor Cam is back for 2022, focusing on a new nest in Tom's Canyon featuring #462 (male) and #846 (female). Their egg started pipping today, and is expected to hatch in the next 24-48 hours! Watch live at allaboutbirds.org/condors #462 was wild-hatched in 2008 by foster parents, male #247 and female #79 out of a Huttons Bowl nest, the same territory featured in last year's Condor Cam. #462 has nested twice before in 2018 and 2020; both times in Tom's Canyon with previous mate, fe

Behold, Sisquoc the mighty California condor. In 1982, only 22 California condors remained in the wild. Sisquoc joined us in 1983 as the first chick to ever hatch at a zoo, but thankfully he wasn't the last. Through the California Condor Recovery Program, the population has grown to over 400 birds and we're proud to say we've had 165 hatchlings since Sisquoc's arrival. endextinction.org/wildlife/condor | San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Take an inside look at the decades-long effort to save the California condor! By 1982, only 22 California condors survived in the wild. As of last year, thanks to countless partners teaming up for a breeding program, there were nearly 350 of North America’s largest birds in the wild. At The Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey outside Boise, Idaho, partners have raised more than 300 California condors. “What’s remarkable is that they’re really raising the future of the California cond

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released an adult California condor into the wild back in September. This condor, #939, was hatched & reared at the L.A. Zoo in 2018 as part of the California Condor Recovery Program, led by USFWS. Condor #939 was only in the wild for a brief time before she was discovered sick and exhibiting symptoms of lead poisoning in early 2025 - an all too common threat for the California condor. What followed was a harrowing journey to save this wild condor. Read all abo

Breeding season for California condors is in full swing, and you know what that means: it's time for a dance-off! Condor trio 805, 861, & 926 have been inseparable for several years, but they have yet to nest together. This year feels different though – for the past few weeks they’ve been spotted passionately dancing nearly every day, and they’ve moved into a premium nesting territory on Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge. Here’s hoping that this is the year they start a family! Video by USFW

FLYING HIGH AND DEFYING GRAVITY, CONDOR #1201 TAKES HIS FIRST FLIGHT INTO THE WILD! After being raised with care at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, it was finally his chance to fly. If you care to find him, look to the western sky! This fall we released 11 captive-raised condors total – one of our largest cohorts yet. *UPDATE: Neither condor voluntarily entered the release trap today, so no birds were released. The NCCRP Crew will try again tomorrow, starting at 8:30am. The Northern California Condor Restoration Program is planning to release one condor tomorrow morning (Tuesday, September 9th). NCCRP staff will initiate a "soft release” at 6:30am, letting the condor exit the facility of their own free will, on their own timescale. If it is raining too hard, NCCRP biologists intend to wait until it is clear e

James Puente on Instagram: "CALIFORNIA CONDOR in ZION 🏜️ While hiking Angels Landing in November 2023, I asked the rangers checking trail permits if they’d seen any condors recently. To my surprise, they said yes! The ranger directed me to where they’d last seen it, and there she was: the rarest and largest bird in North America – the California condor – perched on a rock spire beneath the chains section on Angels Landing, warming herself in the morning sun. With an over 9-foot wingspan (!!!) t
