Mississippi has executed the longest-serving man on its death row nearly 50 years after he was convicted of murder.

Richard Jordan, Mississippi’s longest serving and oldest death row inmate, died by lethal injection Wednesday evening at the Mississippi State Penitentiary nearly 50 years after he kidnapped and murdered Edwina Marter.

Jordan was sentenced to death in 1976 for kidnapping and killing a bank loan officer's wife in a violent ransom scheme.
