The Big Ten's radical idea to expand the College Football Playoff from 12 to 28 teams is already off to a rocky start, according to industry sources who spoke to CBS Sports on the condition of anonymity.

Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti recently floated the two expansion models to athletic directors in that conference, per Marcello. The Southeastern Conference, the other dominant league in college football, was later informed.

The BTN crew stopped by all 18 league schools for behind the scenes practices this month and wrapped up its three-week tour in Ann Arbor on Aug. 22.

This season, the USC Trojans return some of their most talented players, on both sides of the ball. A recent article ranked college football's top players and two USC stars were excluded, but college football analysts found that they were simply snubbed.

The change was approved by conference presidents and chancellors. It previously had been recommended by league athletic directors.
